City of Arrabar

Welcome to your Adventure Log!
A blog for your campaign

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.

Who is Enzo and why does he want us dead??

The party must stop to consider – who is Enzo and why does it appear that he wants them dead?

They found a scrap of paper in the pocket of the halfling mage leading the thugs who attacked them in the street – it said only, “Enzo, The Lecherous Unicorn”.

Finding the Lecherous Unicorn, they went inside to look over the crowd. As it was almost 4 AM, there weren’t many people inside. One who quickly drew their attention was a small fellow sitting by himself, nervously fidgeting and repeatedly glancing at the front door. Wanda tried approaching him with a cum-hither glance and her comely appearance, but to no avail. Baelanor then approached the man and ‘helped’ him, removing Wanda from his presence and returning to talk. Enzo quickly and willingly blurts out that he sure could use some help of somebody strong and capable if his friend doesn’t show up soon! They agree to meet again after sundown here at the bar. Everyone leaves separately.

The next evening, Enzo is quite happy to see Baelanor again and attempts to hire him in a none-too-subtle manner. It becomes obvious that he is indeed trying the get the party killed though he doesn’t really know who they are. His introduction is quite a shock as the group drags him out the back door to have a talk with him. He quickly spills everything he knows about the secret cult he’s desperate to join, even without knowing who the cult follows. He gives out the location of the secret meeting place all too easily and runs for the hills when Trayton suggests he leave town forever.

The party makes their way to the location given and successfully bypasses the locked back door. They find a house covered in dust except near the back entrance. Looking about, the stairs downward beckon to them.

After the last killing blow, the party finds themselves in a strange workshop indeed. There are three strangely glowing sets of runes and incantations spread out on the floor of this room, along with a workbench and several large bookshelves.

Looking around, you find some documents which are obviously written processes for animating dead corpses. The rituals require at least one, though sometimes several fairly fresh corpses to create one horrible unliving creation and your stomach turns at the description of the process. While the documents specifically describe appealing to a deity for the unholy power to raise these horrific creatures, they don’t specify exactly who will hear those appeals.

The bookshelves contain record scrolls of many previous experiments, most failures, some partially successful and the most recent indicating a mastery over the process.

Scattered around the room, you can assemble spell/ritual components worth about 50 gp, usable for any ritual.

XP: 180 each.

The deep darkness of the hallway releases the sound of a scream of terror from a living throat. What terror still awaits you???? X.P. earned: 900 total, 180 each.

Arrabar Goings On, 11th level
  •  Story Progression  ***

The yearly Festival of Renewal in Arrabar was an unqualified success. King Johan Wianar revealed the complete Rod of Rulership to the people for the first time in over two hundred years, quelling rumors that he could not prove his right to rule the city. Additionally, he announced his betrothal to one Mesmora Laceweave, Princess of Damara (a monarchy very far to the north, beyond The Sea Of Fallen Stars), niece of King Yarin Frostmantle. The union is seen as one borne of political alliance though the bride to be is reputed to be exceptionally beautiful and trained in the minstrel arts. Critics of King Wianar claim the marriage was hastily arranged to lend him some shred of credibility and ‘royal’ standing with other nations before he knew that his ‘mercenaries’ would succeed in recovering the pieces of the Rod. In the weeks following the announcement, Damara has established an embassy and trading company.

  • Background info on Damara  **
Damara is known to be populated by hearty plainsmen who raise fine wheats and grains during the short growing season. However, it is still recovering from a recent war with Vaasa to the west. King Frostmantle is widely believed to have murdered his predecessor before his ascension to the throne some 20 years ago. Impiltur to their south is known to be highly unstable with frequent trouble from some sort of demon cult. Narfell to the east is stable and peaceful though the denizens of the Dunwood forest (between the two nations) are frequent raiders and brigands disrupting traffic between Damara and the nearest large port, Uthmere.

Those with more intimate knowledge of the country (and of the area) know that Damara is allied with/controlled by The Zhentarim, a fanatical evil organization with links to Bane and Cyric.

Lihon Suojakilpi, the leader of The Red Lightning, an adventuring group of some renown in Arrabar and surrounding areas, has been appointed as a Sheriff of Arrabar, attached to the military command of the city. The Red Lightning have been prominently mentioned in connection with the recent recoveries of the Rod of Rulership. It is not known if the appointment is a ceremonial position or what duties will be assigned to it. Additionally, another Red Lightning – Paladin Karv of Oghma – has accepted a position as an advisor to the King’s Vizier, Runther the Great. As Runther is known to be disinterested in politics or the machinations at court (hence his nickname, Runther the Scowler), this position must be based on merit.

Those with connections to the more shadowy figures in the city have been gossiping about the unexplained disappearance of the head of one of the local mob gangs, one Bernard “Roof Runner” Mirador, head of the High Street Elites. One of his former captains, known only as ‘Wanda’ has stepped into the leadership vacuum. Various rumors about ‘Wanda’ detail her activities as an assassin, a mercenary, an adventurer, a mole working for King Wianar or a spy with the Damara embassy. Rival gangs looking to expand their turf at the Elites expense are watching carefully. And the city guard has recently started asking questions about Wanda in areas known to be hubs of criminal activity.

  •  Game Rule Progression:  ***
First up, a great injustice has been corrected – the potion of cure light wounds is back!!!

Potion of Cure Light Wounds   Cost: 20 GP
Level 1 Consumable: potion         Minor action to consume
Effect: You drink the potion. If you have a healing surge, you must spend one. If you are bloodied and don’t have any healing surges, you still regain the hit points. Instead of the hit points you would normally regain, you regain 1d8+1 hit points. If you have no surges but are not bloodied, there is no effect.

Cure Moderate Wounds     Cost: 200 GP   Level 10
As Potion of Cure Light Wounds, but you regain 2d8+10 hit points.

Cure Critical Wounds     Cost: 5000 GP   Level 20
As Potion of Cure Light Wounds, but you regain 3d8+20 hit points.

Potion of Heal     Cost: 125,000 GP     Level 30
As Potion of Cure Light Wounds, but you regain 4d8+30 hit points.

Magic Items will now be handled/acquired in a non-standard way. Any item of 10th level or below is commonly available excepting those listed as rare or items which are artifacts. Any items of level 11 or higher is considered unavailable except the following:

  • those with only a simple magic enhancement, i.e. +3, +4, +5, etc.
  • any Dwarven armor (which is now expanded to include every armor type),
  • any Cloak of Resistance
  • any potion

Items with more interesting enchantments do exist (and are highly prized/rarely sold) but also can be made by persons of sufficient skill, but they require more effort and more exotic ingredients than merely enhanced items. When commissioning a high level item, characters will have to undertake searches for those ingredients or complete specific rituals or tasks to complete the process of creation.

Here’s an example: Lihon currently owns a Lightning Bastard Sword +2, a 10th level item. He can upgrade it to a +3 Bastard Sword (11th level) just by paying the difference in cost (4000 GP). But to upgrade it to a Lightning Bastard Sword +3 (15th level), he’ll have to do more than just pay the difference (20K GP in this case). He will have to obtain some ingredients or complete a task of some kind to fully complete the magic ritual which upgrades the weapon. It will behave just like his 10th level weapon in the meantime.

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, I

With Karv not in attendance, Lihon, Wanda and Darkpaw decide to strike out on their own to the new Damarran embassy and stir up some trouble. The plan is this – Wanda will bring some of her new gang to try and steal goodies from crates of goods coming to the embassy, Darkpaw will break into the building proper and look through any files and documents she can find and Lihon will post himself in the dark nearby where he can quickly respond if signaled or needed. In addition, both Wanda and Darkpaw carried Scraps of cloth with the emblem of a gang whose territory the embassy is in which Wanda decides to scapegoat – The High Street Elites.

All starts well…. Lihon takes up position while Darkpaw and Wanda (+ crew) have no difficulties avoiding the token guards posted at either end of the property. Darkpaw makes her way into the residence to start searching while Wanda+ get to the stables and start opening crates. Wanda quickly finds some things which pique her interest:
– a set of stamps, along with inks and seals, for marking official communiques from the embassy,
– a crate of potions,
– some key pieces of the official china pattern for the embassy.
Wanda gathers these together with her henchmen and start to make her way back out.

Suddenly, a twisted root trips one of the henchmen carrying the crate of potions. Amid the sound of breaking glass, the guards realize that something is wrong and spring into action! As does Lihon.

Lihon activates his famous shield of light and effectively blinds the nearest guards as well as holding their attention as he imitates a drunken fighter. Wanda and her people make it over the wall as Darkpaw quietly exits the building and brings some interesting files with her. Once her henchmen are safely over the wall and headed out, Wanda comes back to lure the guards in a different direction. She and Darkpaw let the guards see them just as they escape and drop their cloth scraps with the West Side Sharks emblems. Lihon likewise fades into the night.

Back home, reviewing their take, some decisions are made. Wanda will sell the china and silverware pieces at a commoner’s market the party will share the potions. The documents and stamps will be hidden. And she and Darkpaw will start hunting the leader of the West Side Sharks, an elf named Dharvek.

After the raid on the embassy, Wanda and Darkpaw set out to find and capture Dharvek, the leader of the West Side Sharks. After a series of skillchecks, they narrow his location down to a probability that he will be in a particular area at a given time, but don’t know the particular starting point or destination.

They wander about and happen upon their quarry. After a brief fight, he is captured and dragged away to the secret(?) room beneath the group’s home. There, he is tortured and killed.

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, II

As the session opens, Lihon, as Leader of the Red Lightnings, is summoned by Sir Jornant, the King’s Squire. He angrily confronts Lihon and Karv with a secret communique from the Damarran embassy to their home office with asks for guidance in dealing with an extortion attempt. The document appears to be completely genuine based on the stamps and seals. Additionally, there is a note, written in a woman’s hand, which appears to subtly demand gems in return for protection for the embassy from firebombing. It includes an emblem with the distinctive Red Lightning thunderbolt and the name High Street Elites. Lihon & Karv are shocked and stunned. They protest the innocence of the Red Lightnings in any part of events at the embassy. The Squire emphatically demands that Lihon and Karv produce evidence of who is actually responsible and that those parties not be dead. Karv makes some notes about the handwriting on the note.

The two return to the house to relate the accusation to the rest of the group. Wanda checks her secret hiding room in the basement and finds that the new emblem she created (but never used), as described above, is gone. Also missing are the stamps and inks which were stolen from the embassy along with her personal fortune of 53 PP. Wanda leads everyone down to the secret hiding room in the basement, which Lihon & Karv knew nothing about, to show what has been taken. Lihon also find that his 57 PP are missing as well. Darkpaw investigates and finds traces of muck and goo from the sewers, indicating that the thief came in through the sewer entrance.

Recriminations fester….

After much discussion about next steps, the four heroes step out their front door to begin investigations, only to find an ambush on their doorstep.

A group of thugs has set an ambush and their leader summons a demon to fight for them. The party makes quick work of the whole bunch (several escape) and manage to defeat the demon and capture the leader, known as Jolly. He admits to staging the whole attack to target Wanda for death in revenge for the killing of Dharvek and buying a scroll from a wizard in order to summon the demon. The guard arrives quickly and haul him, a known criminal from the West Side Sharks, off to jail.

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, III

Our intrepid adventurers then spent time working on several initiatives -

  • Darkpaw has met with a person known to her only as Viktor, who works for the Damarran embassy staff in some sort of capacity. She gave him documents which she told Viktor she gathered from Dharvek, the person who led the burglary. Viktor was appreciative, but reluctant. He expressed interest in any other stolen items she might be able to recover. Darkpaw may have gained an important clue about him when she was trying to impress him.
  • Karv & Lihon, through some gifted (some might say damned skillful) boozing around, found out that the West Side Sharks lost a good third of their people in the ill fated ambush which Jolly led. The second in command of the ‘Sharks, named Lumas, hasn’t been seen at all lately while the number three man, Sticky Mickey, has been seen only sporadically in the last couple of weeks.
  • Wanda met with the leader of the Crypt Kings. He wanted to discuss the idea of a cooperative partnership/merger with the High Street Elites (to both expand into profitable territories + avoid a hostile takeover by the High Street Elites). What luck! Wanda needs some extra people to help her consolidate the territory of the West Side Sharks. They strike a bargain whereby he becomes one of her lieutenants and has responsibility for about a third of the ’Sharks old territory.
  • Wanda gets a visit from a gruff human named Sullivan who works for the Hadrhune. He informs her that she’s late for last month’s AND this month’s payments, totaling 2000 GP. He tells her where these payments are to be delivered normally and advises her that she does not want him to have to come back. Her men seem to know Sullivan by reputation and agree. Wanda checks her funds and sees that her people have brought her 1800 GP. She sets her #2 to the task of finding another 200 from her crew and getting it delivered. Wanda actually paid the full 2000 GP to Sullivan herself on the spot – 1800 in coin from her gang, 100 in coin from her pocket and 100 in a pair of earrings Sullivan indicated would cover the balance. Wanda estimates those earrings were actually worth much more than 100 GP.
  • Lihon receives a message from COL Lurshall – “Threat from Feywild is real, please advise if Red Lightning is available to investigate.”
  • Wanda has already taken the preliminary step of asking her people to quietly patrol the area around the house. There’s no direct cost for this, but there may be a loss of productivity in their earnings.

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, Recap

Our heroes have thwacked a bee’s nest with their efforts to hinder the Damarran embassy. After their successful raid/burglary, several things have happened:

1) Someone who knew about Wanda’s secret entrance utilized it to enter the house and burglarize the heroes. Among the items taken are: 100+ platinum pieces (belonging to Wanda & Lihon), a new logo for the High Street Elites bearing a prominent Red Lightning bolt which Wanda had prepared (though never used) and the official seals and stamp stolen from the Damarran embassy.

2) That someone then put the logo and seals to good use by creating a fake Damarran diplomatic message (stamped and official) which referred to an extortion effort by a local gang along with a handwritten note bearing the new HSE logo threatening a fire if gems were not paid. The note was written in a woman’s hand. Karv is sure that whoever did the forgery was not copying a sample of Wanda’s handwriting.

3) Those documents were then somehow brought to the attention of the King’s Squire, Sir Jornant, who quite angrily made them known to Lihon & Karv. The Squire has “strongly urged” the two to provide evidence that the Red Lightning have no involvement in the events at the Damarran embassy.

4) Mere moments after the party members were able to collect and share these bits of information, a band of street thugs appeared outside their door and ambushed them. While the thugs themselves were only marginally threatening, one of them summoned a minor demon to assist them. The ensuing fight and spectacle has been the talk of Arrabar. Several of the thugs escaped, but not the leader/summoner, a criminal known as ‘Jolly’. He has since confessed to organizing the attack and summoning the demon (from a purchased scroll), all with the intent of murdering Wanda. He did this as revenge for the presumed murder of his gang leader, Dharvek, head of the West Side Sharks. (Alert readers will remember that our heroes attempted to implicate the ’Sharks in the burglary.) (Dharvek is indeed dead, slain by Wanda & Darkpaw after a ruthless interrogation.)

5) Our intrepid adventurers then spent time working on several initiatives -

  • Darkpaw has met with a person known to her only as Viktor, who works for the Damarran embassy staff in some sort of capacity. She gave him documents which she told Viktor she gathered from Dharvek, the person who led the burglary. Viktor was appreciative, but reluctant. He expressed interest in any other stolen items she might be able to recover. Darkpaw may have gained an important clue about him when she was trying to impress him.

He informs her that she’s late for last month’s  AND this month’s payments, totalling 2000 GP.

A correction -
Wanda actually paid the full 2000 GP to Sullivan herself on the spot – 1800 in coin from her gang, 100 in coin from her pocket and 100 in a pair of earrings Sullivan indicated would cover the balance. Wanda estimates those earrings were actually worth much more than 100 GP.

  • Lihon receives a message from COL Lurshall – “Threat from Feywild is real, please advise if Red Lightning is available to investigate.”

Additional musings in response to James’ protestations:
Point of order. Do we really know this? I would offer that anyone able to get in and out of this room would have had no issue getting into the house another way and likely been as sneaky. For that matter I would offer going through a secret room would be MORE risky as it lets US know they know about it to take measures to protect it.

Do we need to announce new security for the house going forward?

My reply:
The chair recognizes Wanda -
a) Perception checks performed in the secret room ascertained that there were traces of substances consistent with the sewers, presumably left by the perp(s).
b) Could someone have gotten in and out of the house by the front/back door or windows? Yes. However, coming in through the secret entrance seems to be what was done. For what reason? Perhaps that entrance is easier to get to without observation. Perhaps there was a presumption that traps would be less likely to be used on a ‘secret’ entrance intended to be used during an emergency/in haste. Perhaps the DM is taking perverse joy in exposing the existence of a secret entrance/room into the house. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekov%27s_gun)
c) Perhaps the perp(s) wanted you to know how they got in and out. Perhaps they thought you wouldn’t figure it out. Perhaps they assumed that whatever route they chose to use, you would afterwards take measures anyway.
d) Let’s see – you are a group of adventurers with some known links to the King and the Underworld. Either of those will probably earn you some enemies and you have both. You wear highly expensive magic items and fine clothing crafted from the hides of terrible monsters you have slain. I’d think that any common citizen and/or criminal would assume that your home would be filled with wonderful items, trophies and riches. Surely some sort of protective measure might be called for….

As to the discussion about protecting this home or moving to another home (either purchased or built) – this would be a common problem faced by the rich and noble in Arrabar. There must be ways of dealing with such problems available to those with money and resources, no?
- Hire vetted contractors to install improvements like better locks, traps, enchanted alarms, etc.
- Hire guards
- Place all your valuables in a bank or vault
- Hire a wizard to
- Combinations of the above.

Wanda has already taken the preliminary step of asking her people to quietly patrol the area around the house. There’s no direct cost for this, but there may be a loss of productivity in their earnings.

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, IV

With plenty of information to work with, our heroes chase down their leads:

  • Lihon & Karv return to speak with the Squire. He is much calmer on this occasion and apologizes for his behavior previously. Several things are established –
    1) The Squire does not actually suspect our heroes.
    2) The Squire has not shown the King the documents.
    3) The Squire will not say how he got the documents, only that they appear to be genuine, no matter their actual history.
  • Darkpaw meets with Viktor again. He remains wary of her, though he has asked her to run some errands for him. When she confronts him, he admits that it is very unlikely that he will ever trust her – she claims to want to put her skills to use, but not for the local government or the underworld. He asks about her wanting to work instead for his government. Her motivations seem not to convince him of anything. But, he says, as thanks for the documents she has retrieved, he will tell her the probable location of a member of the West Side Sharks in hiding. He only asks that she let him know of any other Damarran property she comes across. He mentions the stamps, but comments that they are being replaced anyway.
  • Wanda’s gang is moving into ‘Sharks territory with mixed results. Ponze can’t readily get takers for the protection rackets as people are unsure which gang will be there. But Ricdak hasn’t tried to sell any – he’s just committing burglaries as fast as he can, figuring people who have been paying protection feel safe and have lots of stuff to swipe. Damarius is moving in slowly and tracking the remaining ’Sharks.
  • Lihon replies to COL Lurshall that the group can take the outside mission in a couple of days.
  • Wanda gets the whole gang together for a surprise meet with one of the two remaining Shark made men – Squeaky, who runs a large gambling joint. With Lihon and Karv impersonating enthusiastic eaters and Darkpaw gambling a bit, Wanda passes a skill challenge of smooth persuasion and convinced Squeaky to join up. He promises to have Kemmar, the last holdout, come in to talk with her.
  • Darkpaw leads everyone to the address given to her by Viktor. Lihon alerts his friend in the guard while Wanda arranges for backup by Demarius. Battle is joined and the session ends mid-fight!

Damarran Embassy Hijinx, V (End)

Finishing the fight from last session, our heroes engage in some creative activities….

  • Lihon manages to spirit Sticky Mickey away from the battlefield and hide him in the secret basement hideout. Despite his attempts at Intimidation, Mickey remains defiant and won’t talk.
  • Darkpaw takes off once the Damarran stamps are found to talk with Viktor. Delivering the news that the missing items have been found, Viktor is pleased, but still restrained. Darkpaw comes to understand that he will not ever truly trust her, though perhaps he will work with her for special tasks.
  • Karv and Wanda are left to search the house thoroughly. Wanda finds an elaborate fire trap system in the basement with plenty of extra fuel sitting around waiting to go up in flames. Despite her best efforts, the entire building is engulfed in flames at one point, raising questions from the fire marshal about their activities in the building in the wee hours of the morning. But they persevere and manage to disable the system then open the locked secret room beyond it. Inside, they find money and items which Mickey obviously used to move about in disguise. They turn in a couple of items and the stamps to the proper authorities.

Assembling back at the house, the group decides to let Wanda & Karv deal with Mickey. With their earnest bargaining, he agrees to answer questions in return for being released at the city gates with the understanding that he will be killed should he return. But he makes another side deal with Darkpaw & Wanda – he will show them how to find Dharvek’s hidden treasure stash in return for 1/3rd of the contents. They agree and he leads them to it. They hold up their end of the bargain and run him out of town alive.

XP Awarded: 8000 points for the group/2000 each.
